Hidden Trails: Bill Moore Lake

The first summer after getting my Jeep I made a goal for myself to visit every lake I could around the Idaho Springs area. I made most of the lakes pretty easily and quickly in that first summer. Every time I planned to go to Bill Moore Lake something always prevented me from doing so. Fallen trees, weather conditions, and work. The end of last summer I had gone weeks without being able to hit the mountains and out of the blue my friend texted me about this amazing lake he heard about. Turns out this would be my chance to see the most “Colorado” scene I have seen yet.

Once you arrive at the top of the trail you’ll come to a round about with a walking trail to the lake itself. Two structures on your right take you back to the past. If you keep exploring the immediate area and head to the left, you’ll come upon what seems like a well-manicured camping spot. Hopefully the firepit we remade is still there. If not, you’re in the Rocky Mountains and can find other rocks to work with. As the sun sets and you get the fire going take time to soak all the views in. This is truly a magical place. The bugs certainly seem to enjoy it, don’t forget the bug spray!!

Above the main lake you’ll notice some trails taking you to the three lakes above! That’s right, you get to explore three more lakes all on one trail! How cool right? The first lake isn’t just cool to look at but you also get a great view of Bill Moore Lake from above too! As you keep going the incline gets far more severe, this is not for the weary! The second lake provides a well-earned reprieve from the winds moving across the open space and the steepening incline.

For those feeling truly adventurous there’s yet one more small lake to see. I went in the end of the summer and still this lake was half iced over. This will give you a good idea of what the conditions above 13k feet are like. Though not as big or impressive as the main lake the minerals in the mountainside provide an amazing contrast against the bright blue water in the lake. Once there don’t forget to take a look around and look at the amazing cliffs around. You’re also able to view the other two lakes quite well from this vantage point.

We haven’t really touched on the main lake yet but I had a hard time putting it into words. I figured I would let the view speak for itself. Check below to see why this lake will always be special to me.

Please remember to always pick up after yourselves when going anywhere and especially when using the beautiful public lands we all enjoy. There’s nothing worse than having a trail get closed due to a few people not being respectful. If you’d like more information on this trail such as directions or how to get involved with your local forestry volunteer program please don’t hesitate to reach out!
